Learning through stories.

I hope you enjoy sharing my book Beach with your children. Hopefully you are finding the words relaxing and soothing, like the sea.
When I read it to children we make up actions to go with the repeated refrain; warm sand, soft on toes, gentle breeze, sun glows. They love doing this and the actions seem to help them remember the words. When we know the words by heart, we try to find the words that rhyme.
After the story we sometimes get the crayons and big paper out. We draw the waves and the sunshine. We draw them large in the air first(air writing), then onto the paper. This helps develop our gross and fine motor control.
Sometimes the children enjoy making a story box to go with their favourite stories. We usually use a shoe box. Last week we painted the bottom of the box yellow and sprinkled a little sand onto the paint. The back was painted two shades of blue for the sea and the sky. We had some shells that the children enjoyed playing with, and cupping over their ears to hear the sea. We stuck on some cotton wool clouds. Next week we will use some play people to play in our Beach Story Box. We will cut out a dolphin and go on some dolphin rides! 🐬
Happy Reading!
